Overview

Dr. Garland is the Medical Director of the Infectious Diseases and Immunology Center at The Miriam Hospital. He oversees the outpatient services of the Infectious Diseases Division, including the federally-funded Ryan White HIV care program which cares for over 2,000 people living with HIV; the outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) program; the travel medicine clinic; and the outpatient  infectious diseases consultation service. Across all clinics, the Division sees over 20,000 outpatient visits per year. He also provides inpatient infectious diseases consultation at the Miriam Hospital and Rhode Island Hospital. Dr. Garland has clinical expertise in HIV care, general infectious diseases, travel medicine, and care of immigrant populations. He co-chaired the state-wide 90-90-90 collaborative for improving HIV outcomes in Rhode Island, and is a member of the New England Steering Committee of the American Academy of HIV Medicine. As an educator, Dr. Garland is the course director for clinical rotations in the Internal Medicine residency program and for Brown medical students at the Immunology Center. He also directs a clinical course for medical students at a local community health center, Clinica Esperanza. He is core faculty in the infectious diseases and HIV medicine fellowship programs. Dr. Garland received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Harvard University and completed residency and fellowship training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He was on faculty at the University of Pennsylvania from 2011 through 2015, and joined the faculty at Brown in 2015.
