Associate Professor Emeritus of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Overview

Dr. Birkenbach is an Associate Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and a pathologist at Lifespan Academic Medical Center with special interest and expertise in renal pathology and cardiac pathology. He obtained his medical degree at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, followed by residency in Anatomic Pathology at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Birkenbach also held the roles of Research Associate at the University of Chicago Department of Pathology and Harvard Medical School, Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics. He is board certified in anatomic pathology by the American Board of Pathology, and  Dr. Birkenbach has particular interest and expertise in viral infections, post infectious immune-mediated and inflammatory disorders, and nephropathology.  In particular, his work has helped define the pathogenesis of Epstein-Barr viral infections in humans, and post-infectious complications.
