Michael Bernstein is an experimental psychologist. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Imaging at the Warren Alpert Medical School. His research is focused on the overlap of cognitive science and medicine. Dr. Bernstein's NIDA K-01 award examines whether the long-established analgesic (pain relieving) properties of placebos can be used to minimze opioid use among acute pain patients. He is serving as co-editor of a forthcoming book (publisher: Mayo Clinic Press) on the nocebo effect, which broadly refers to placebo effects that hurt rather than help patients.
