Clinical Professor of Behavioral and Social Sciences, Clinical Professor of Family Medicine

Overview

As a board certified family medicine physician who has worked in acadmeics most of my career, I have taught, led research teams, served as a department chair and other administrative roles, and worked internationally. Currently I am a US Fulbright Scholar in the West Bank faciliating faculty development in a young department of Family Medicine. 

  • Teaching: medical school, rural medical school tracks, Family Medicine residency. At Brown -- PLME 700 Communications in Health Care, Gateways (MSc), Doctoring years 1+ 2 small group facilitator
  • Research: Qualitative and Mixed Methods approaches in intimate partner violence, rural medical edcuation, guideline implementation in primary care, and most recently medical professionalism. 
  • Global Health: Community health assessments, Medical aspect of community response to domestic violence, Women's health cervical cancer screening, family medicine capacity building.  Experiences in Central America, Russia and Former Soviet Union and Middle East.
  • Advocacy: Understanding my patients’ challenges has inspired me to advocate on their behalf to the national and state legislatures and to local leaders.
  • Creative writing: Reflection is an important skill in medicine. I have edited collections of stories about doctoring, helped students write/publish stories, write novels, and maintain a blog.
