Carthene R. Bazemore-Walker Adjunct Associate Professor of Chemistry

Carthene R. Bazemore-Walker is Director of Science Initiatives and Associate Professor of Chemistry at Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina. She is also adjunct Associate Professor of Chemistry at Brown University. Prior to joining the faculty at Winston-Salem State University, she was a member of the faculty at Brown University, the University of Virginia, and Norfolk State University.

Professor Bazemore-Walker graduated summa cum laude with her B.S. degree in Chemistry from Norfolk State University. She was a duel David and Lucile Packard Fellow and a University of Virginia Graduate Presidential Fellow while working on her Ph.D. degree in Chemistry with Professor Donald F. Hunt. Professor Bazemore-Walker completed her postdoctoral research at Massachusetts Institute of Technology with Professor Lawrence J. Stern and at Praecis Pharmaceuticals, Incorporated where she was Supervisor of the Mass Spectrometry group.

research overview

Research in our lab is multidisciplinary and is directed toward the development of proteomic methods that allow for the characterization of membrane proteins. We use our analytical toolbox - liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry - in combination with traditional biochemistry techniques in order to address challenging biological questions, particularly those relevant to subcellular/organelle-specific protein localization.

research statement

Research in my laboratory is directed toward the development and application of proteomic methods that will allow for the characterization of protein post-translational modifications and multiprotein complexes at physiological levels. Student trainees not only create new chromatography and mass spectrometry technologies, but also utilize them to answer important biological questions. More specifically, our interdisciplinary research endeavor focuses on the analytical goals of enhancing sample recovery, increasing chromatographic separation capability, and optimizing mass spectrometric detection limits in an effort to elucidate the structure and macromolecular interactions of membrane proteins and characterize signaling pathways initiated by integral membrane receptors.

Alumni of the lab have directly entered industrial and government positions (Adimab, Cell Signaling Technology, NIST) and competitive postdoctoral programs (Eli Lilly, Bristol-Myers Squibb).
