Catherine M. Gordon Adjunct Professor of Pediatrics

I am Director of the Adolescent Medicine Division at Hasbro Children’s Hospital and Professor of Pediatrics at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. From 2000-2012, I served as Director of the Bone Health Program and DXA Center, and was appointed Medical Director of the Clinical and Translational Science Unit of Boston Children’s Hospital from 2009-2012. My primary research interest is the effect of nutrition and malnutrition on bone in pediatric patients. I have published widely in the areas of skeletal losses in adolescents with anorexia nervosa, cystic fibrosis, inflammatory bowel disease, and vitamin D deficiency. I have a clinical and research interest in the ‘energy deficit’ that can be seen in female athletes with amenorrhea who may develop early osteoporosis and sustain recurrent musculoskeletal injuries such as stress fractures. Many of these athletes are found to have vitamin D deficiency. I have served as President of the Pediatric Bone and Mineral Working Group for the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research; Co-Chair of the Pediatric Scientific Advisory Committee for the International Society for Clinical Densitometry, was elected to their Board of Directors, and now serve as Secretary; Chair of the Research Committee for the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine; Co-Chair of the Drugs and Therapeutics Committee for the Pediatric Endocrine Society; and was elected to the Society for Pediatric Research Council. I have directed the Student Research Program for the American Pediatric Society and Society for Pediatric Research since 2011.

Research Summary

Dr. Catherine Gordon's work is directed at developing new approaches to prevent bone loss in at-risk patients by defining the lifestyle variables that affect the development of peak bone mass. She is seeking to identify factors that contribute to bone loss in healthy children and adolescents, as well as in those with such disorders as anorexia nervosa, inflammatory bowel disease, and cystic fibrosis. She is particularly interested in the influence of nutrition on hormones that affect bone development, such as adrenal and gonadal androgens, in this age group. In a related line of research, she is evaluating peripheral quantitative computed tomography (PQCT) as modalities for measuring bone density in adolescents.

Dr. Gordon is Director of the Division of Adolescent Medicine at Hasbro Children's Hospital. She holds a joint appointment in the Brown University Departments of Pediatrics and Orthopedics. She has received independent funding from NIH, Department of Defense, and private foundations to lead a clinical research team at Hasbro Children's Hospital and Brown University.
