Ercan Balcı is the Director of Center for Language Studies at Brown University. He received his Ph.D. in Linguistics from Boğaziçi University in Istanbul,Turkey in 2006. He also serves as the Executive Secretary of the American Association of Teachers of Turkic (AATT). Before starting at Brown, he was the Director of the Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTL) program and Senior Lecturer of Turkish in the Department of Linguistics at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign between 2006 and 2014. In addition to developing and teaching Turkish language courses at all levels, he created and taught Turkish culture classes and led short-term Global Studies study abroad programs to Turkey. Prior to Illinois, besides teaching Turkish for two years at Boğaziçi University, he had six years of English teaching and coordinating experience at Işık University in Turkey. His research interests are Turkish Linguistics, Morpho-phonology, Second Language Acquisition, Foreign Language Curriculum Development and Heritage Language Learners.
