Associate Professor of Medicine (Research)



Dr. Qing Lu is Associate Professor of Medicine (Research) at Alpert Medical School of Brown University and Research Biologist at Providence VA Medical Center/ Ocean State Research Institute.  She is an NIH independent investigator currently funded by R01.  Her research is focused on pulmonary endothelial cell biology and lung inflammation, particularly, she is interested in understanding how external insults (eg. cigarette smoke) and internal stress (eg. adenosine) affect pulmonary endothelial cells and innate immunity and their roles in the development of pulmonary diseases, such as, severe lung infection, acute respiratory destress syndrome (ARDS), COPD and pulmonary hypertension.  As a Principal Investigator, Dr. Lu has directed/directs research projects funded by NIH (R01 HL130230, P20 GM103652 (project 1)), VA (ShEEP Grants), American Lung Association (National), American Thoracic Society/Pulmonary Hypertension Association, Francis Family Foundation, and Rhode Island Foundation.  She has also served/serves as Co-Investigator on several previous and current RO1 and VA Merit Review grants and several Brown University internal grants.  She has published over 30 original research articles, 10 invited reviews, 6 book chapters, and 54 abstracts.  Dr. Lu has served as an ad hoc Member of NIH RIBT study section and Scientific Review Committee Member for American Lung Association, American Heart Association, Qutar National Research Fund, Medical Research Council of the United Kingdom, and Department of Defense (PRMRP program).  She also serves as an Academic Editor for the journal PLOS ONE and an ad hoc peer reviewer for numerous distinguished scientific journals.  Additionally, she has served as a Session Chair, Lead Facilitator, and Program Committee Member for the ATS International Annual Conference and other meetings.  Because of her significant scientific contributions, she has been frequently invited to present her work at local, national and international forums and conferences.  Dr. Lu has significantly contributed to teaching, mentoring, and other service at Brown and the affiliated hospital.  She is a mentor for the Brown University Pathobiology Graduate Program, CardioPulmonary Research Training Program, Brown Undergraduate Summer Research Program, Alpert Medical Student Summer Research Program, and Brown Leadership Alliance Undergraduate Summer Research Program.  Through these programs, she has mentored students ranging from undergraduates, Ph.D graduate students and medical students to pulmonary fellows, post-doctoral fellows and junior faculty and co-authored many research papers with her trainees.  Dr. Lu has been the adviser for 8 undergraduate research training awards and adviser for Dir Research/Independent Study.  She has taught Physiology and Principle of Biology and other courses.  In addition to research and teaching, Dr. Lu serves as a Member of the Medical Faculty Executive Committee of Brown Medical School and the Chair of Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and the Vice-Chair of Subcommittee for Research Safety at Providence VA Medical Center.
