Professor of Surgery

Overview

Dr. Abbas E. Abbas is Professor and Chief of Thoracic Surgery at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and Chief of Thoracic Oncology at Lifespan Health System. In his position, he directs the clinical, educational, and research aspects of the Pulmonary and Esophageal Surgery Programs of the Health System.  Dr. Abbas earned his medical degree from Ain-Shams University School of Medicine in Cairo, Egypt.  He completed a General Surgery residency at the University of Pennsylvania Hospitals in Philadelphia and a fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.  

Professionally, Dr. Abbas has held Academic positions at several institutions in the United States, including Ohio State University, Tulane University, Temple University, and Brown University. He has served as President of the Eastern Cardiothoracic Surgical Society representing Thoracic Surgeons in the Eastern United States. He also serves on the Boards of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the International Society of Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery, the Society for Robotic Surgery, and the American Lung Association. He is on the editorial board of several publications including Associate Editor of Innovations and editorial board member of JTCVS.

His research interests include outcomes research in thoracic oncology and basic science research in tumor organoids. Clinically, he is one of the earliest adopters of robotic thoracic surgery and has trained hundreds of residents, fellows, and surgeons in robotic surgery for mediastinal, esophageal, and lung diseases. He has also authored and edited numerous publications on numerous topics and is frequently invited to speak at major National and International meetings.
