Dr. Ashley Buchanan is an Associate Professor of Biostatistics in the Department of Pharmacy Practice with a Limited Joint Appointment in the Department of Computer Science and Statistics at the University of Rhode Island and an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Biostatistics at the Brown School of Public Health, specializing in the areas of epidemiology and causal inference. She brings over ten years of experience collaborating on HIV/AIDS research working closely with colleagues both domestically and internationally to develop and apply causal methodology to improve treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS.
More recently, her substantive research area has expanded to studying opioid use disorder employing a variety of “big data” sources, including administrative claims data and the prescription drug monitoring programs. Her current methodological research focuses on the development and application of causal inference methods for network-based studies of HIV treatment and prevention among people who use drugs.

Dr. Buchanan's current methodological research focuses on the development and application of causal inference methods for network-based studies of HIV treatment and prevention among people who use drugs. Her substantive research area has expanded to studying opioid use disorder employing a variety of “big data” sources, including administrative claims data and the prescription drug monitoring programs. Her research agenda includes two distinct methodological research areas in causal inference and network science that also support strong high-impact applications to health outcomes data sets in the substantive areas of the HIV epidemic and the opioid crisis, and the intersection with the COVID-19 pandemic. Her statistical areas of interest are generalizability and dissemination of public health interventions using the causal inference paradigm. Her research, teaching, and service contain a strong theme of quantitative rigor in public health research integrated with increasing awareness around public health disparities and improving diversity and inclusion in the field of public health.
