Dr. Almaz Dessie is an Associate Professor of Emergefcny Medicine and Pediatrics at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She earned her BA in Music Theory and Composition, cum laude, and her MD with a concentration in Global Health from Brown University's Program in Liberal Medical Education. Dr. Dessie completed her pediatrics residency at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, followed by fellowships in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Brown University and Emergency Ultrasound at Columbia University.
Dr. Dessie is an expert in pediatric point-of-care ultrasound. She is the Ultrasound Director of the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Director for the Pediatric Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship. and director of Diversity and Inclusion for the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. She also has a passion for diversifying the healthcare workforce and provision of equitable, justice-informed emergency care. She serves as Director of Belonging & Engagement for Brown's Department of Emergency Medicine.
She researches the use of point-of-care ultrasound in pediatric emergency resuscitation, with a focus on severe infections and has authored numerous manuscripts and curricula on issues pertaining to justice, anti-racism, health equity and social emergency medicine. She practices as a pediatric emergency medicine physician at Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence, RI.
