Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine

Overview

Absorbed and impressed by figures from 19th and 20th (and 21st!) centuries of medical practice, I am inspired by classical physician role models. I aim to blend attentive body language with radical listening, open-yet-incisive enquiry; hypothesis-driven comprehensive physical examination; patient-centred explanation of illness, and validation of the state of suffering.

My clinical interests include teaching physical diagnosis, observational skills, bedside manner, development of empathy and compassion. It has been a privilege to be a small group leader in the 2nd year, preclinical Doctoring course since 2019.

My intellectual interests include tropical medicine and global health (I have worked in Kenya, India, and Haiti), difficult and obscure diagnoses, teaching differential diagnosis and clinical decision making.

I have substantial experience in teaching residents and medical students and have been graced with a number of awards for teaching excellence and humanism in the practice of medicine. I am a member of the national Advisory Council for the Gold Humanism Honour Society/GHHS.

I am looking to expand my engagement in clinical teaching, to do more teaching in physical exam skills, lecturing, and to develop my writing skills for narrative medicine and publication of clinical reports.
