Anastacia Kudinova is a licensed clinical psychologist, Assistant Professor (Research) at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University, and a Research Scientist at Bradley Hospital. Her program of research focuses on advancing what is known about the biobehavioral mechanisms underlying suicide risk and mood disorders in youth using interdisciplinary methodology. Her current studies examine the interplay between self-referential processing and suicidal thoughts and behavior in youth in the context of proximal risk factors, including sleep regulation, social media use, and stress. You can learn more about her lab here.
Dr. Kudinova graduated with a BA in psychology from Brigham Young University-Hawaii. She received an MA in clinical psychology at Teacher’s College, Columbia University, and completed a PhD in clinical psychology at the State University of New York at Binghamton. Following a predoctoral internship at the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville, NC, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship on a Child Mental Health T32 at the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior (DPHB) at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She joined the DPHB faculty as an Assistant Professor in 2020.

Ongoing Research Projects
Neural Mechanisms Underlying Self-Critical Rumination and Self-Reassurance and Suicidal Thoughts and Behavior in Youth
This NIMH-supported study focuses on examining whether differential neural processing of self-criticism and self-reassurance is linked to ecologically derived suicidal thoughts and behaviors in youth. Our central methodology is to examine self-critical rumination and self-reassurance using task-dependent and task-independent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and ecological momentary assessment (EMA) in 12-15 year-old youth recruited on the range of suicidal thoughts and behavior. The overarching aims are to: (i) test the associations between in vivo self-critical rumination, self-reassurance, and suicidal thoughts and behavior; (ii) identify neural mechanisms underlying self-critical rumination and self-reassurance; (iii) integrate the findings from the scanner with suicidal thoughts and behavior assessed in adolescents’ real world environment. This is significant, because identifying specific neural mechanisms underlying the interplay between self-critical rumination, self-reassurance, and suicidal thoughts and behavior can help ascertain which teens are at a greater risk for suicidal thoughts and behavior and contribute to development of novel, mechanistically-informed interventions.
Self-Referential States and Proximal Suicidal Ideation in Gender-Diverse Youth
Supported by the Brown Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, this pilot study focuses on how self-referential states intersect with proximal suicidal ideation in gender-diverse (spectrum of transgender and gender nonconforming identities) youth. We seek to characterize the impact of inducing self-referential states linked to recent gender minority stressors on subsequent implicit and explicit suicidal ideation and how state-specific neural activity impacts the magnitude of changes in suicidality. This is significant because the findings may contribute to developing novel interventions that target self-referential states and specific neural pathways to reduce suicide risk in this high-risk population.
Sleep and Circadian Timing and Suicidal Thoughts and Behavior in Youth: The Role of Self-Referential Processing and Its Neural Correlates
This project is supported by the COBRE Center for Sleep and Circadian Rhythms in Child and Adolescent Mental Health at Bradley Hospital. The study seeks to advance our understanding of the daily interplay of sleep and the biological clock and how teens think of themselves with their thoughts of suicide. Our central methodology is to examine the interface of sleep and biological clock and nighttime self-critical rumination and self-reassurance with next-day suicidal thoughts using ecological momentary assessment (EMA), gold-standard assessments of circadian timing and sleep, and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in 60, 13–17-year-old youth. Teens are recruited on a range of suicidal thoughts from the inpatient, partial hospitalization, and outpatient care, as well as the community. This research is significant because characterizing brain-behavior mechanisms of the association of circadian timing and sleep behavior with nighttime self-critical rumination, self-reassurance, and next-day suicidal thinking can contribute to developing novel mobile interventions that target self-referential thinking and sleep to reduce suicide risk in youth.
Completed Projects:
The Intersection of Sleep and Circadian Timing with Social Media Use, Thoughts about Self, and Suicidal Ideation in YouthThis pilot study was supported by the COBRE Center for Sleep and Circadian Rhythms in Child and Adolescent Mental Health at Bradley Hospital. Our prelimenary findings suggest the links between nighttime social media use, self-criticism, and SI. We also found prelimenary support for the wider phase angle–time period between the timing of the circadian clock and the actiial time when teen falls asleep– being linked to social media use and nighttime social media use leading to a shorter subsequent sleep duration.
