Alfred is developing improved algorithms and workflows for modeling the genomics of host/pathogen interactions. He also has a strong interest in training and mentoring the next generation of computational biologists. Alfred completed a PhD in the molecular evolution of noncoding RNAs at Umassmed in 2014, and a postdoc at Cornell that created simulations for modeling the evolution of microRNA binding sites in 2016. Alfred was a tenure track teaching professor of genetics at Elon University from 2016 until 2021, where he mentored undergraduate students in the genomics of endogenous retroviruses, before returning to more research-intensive roles, first in academia as an assistant professor at Umassmed in 2021, and then in industry as a staff scientist in the genomics division of IDEXX in 2022. Alfred joined the faculty at Brown University in November 2022. Alfred lives in Raleigh, North Carolina and works closely with members of of the IDEEL consortium at UNC Chapel Hill.
