Dr. Carla C. Moreira is a distinguished board-certified vascular surgeon and Associate Program Director of General Surgery at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, renowned for her over a decade of clinical excellence in vascular and endovascular surgery. She graduated with a B.A. in Chemistry from Rhode Island College in 2003 and earned her M.D. from Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University in 2008. She completed her General Surgery residency at the University of Chicago in 2013, followed by a 2-year fellowship in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at Boston Medical Center, concluding in 2015.
Upon returning to Rhode Island in 2015, Dr. Moreira joined Brown Surgical Associates and the Department of Surgery at the Warren Alpert Medical School, where she is now an Associate Professor of Surgery. In 2018, she was appointed Section Chief of Vascular Surgery at the Providence VA Medical Center. In this role, she significantly contributed to the excellence of the residency program through her leadership in curriculum design, faculty coordination, accreditation compliance, and resident mentorship. Her dedication to education has been recognized with multiple Excellence in Teaching Awards. In 2021, she further advanced into program leadership, becoming the Associate Program Director of General Surgery. She has successfully secured funding and spearheaded multiple academic initiatives and quality improvement projects, guiding numerous residents and students through clinical practice, research, and career development.
Dr. Moreira has established a national reputation through her extensive contributions to vascular literature, guideline development, and clinical trials. Her research focuses on health disparities and the impact of social determinants of health (SDOH) on vascular patient outcomes. She serves on regional and national committees, holding leadership positions in several, including her current elected role as Recorder for the New England Society of Vascular Surgery (NESVS). In 2023, she was an invited co-moderator at the Association of Program Directors in Surgery (APDS) annual meeting, spearheading discussions on critical issues related to recruiting, retaining, and addressing attrition among underrepresented individuals in surgery. This active advocacy underscores her unwavering commitment to fostering a more equitable and inclusive surgical landscape.
A native of Cape Verde, Dr. Moreira is fluent in Cape Verdean Creole and Portuguese, and conversant in Spanish. She is married to Mr. Larry D. Mannings, Jr., and they have two children, Javon and Kaiden.
