Associate Professor of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology

Overview

Chris de Graffenried is a cell biologist that studies how organisms shape their cells. He focuses on the mechanisms protozoan parasites employ to generate the wide variety of cellular morphologies these organisms use to survive within their hosts. His goal is to understand how evolutionary pressures can push eukaryotes to develop unique strategies for performing fundamental cellular processes, such as cell division. These pathways could serve as targets for drug design to treat many neglected tropical diseases, including Chagas and leishmaniasis.

Professor de Graffenried obtained his Ph.D. in chemistry at UC Berkeley, followed by postdoctoral positions at Yale University School of Medicine and the University of Vienna. He has been a faculty member in the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology since 2013.
