Overview

Dr. Dhananjay Kumar Tiwary is currently on leave from the position of Advisor in the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India where he led Global InnovationDirectorate and was actively involved in various activities of Biomanufacturing Initiatives of the Department.Dr. Tiwary also held additional charge of Managing Director of a vaccine making company, Bharat Immunological & Biological Corporation Limited, a Public Sector Undertaking under the aegis of Department of Biotechnology, Government of India.

Dr. Tiwary previously served as Science Counsellor at the Indian Mission in Washington, D.C., where he worked extensively with scientific agencies and research groups to advance science and technologycooperation between India and the U.S. Dr. Tiwary was pivotal in fostering the Initiative for Critical & Emerging Technologies (i-CET) and played an active role in establishing new collaborations between scientific communities. During the pandemic, Dr. Tiwary played a leading role in facilitating the exchange ofknowledge, sharing research resources, and building partnerships.

Dr. Tiwary has extensive experience in the governance and management of science, having served as ascientist with the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, since May 2010. Prior to his appointment as science counsellor in Washington, D.C., in February 2019, Dr. Tiwary played a significant role within the Department of Biotechnology, where he was actively involved in the planning, implementation, and monitoring of various programs aimed at advancing research and fostering innovationin in emerging technologies such as nanobiotechnology and genome engineering with applications in health, agriculture, and the environment.

Before joining the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, Dr. Tiwary was a scientist at the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research-Institute of Bioresource Technology, Palampur, where his research focused on bioresource technology, analytical chemistry for health safety, and grassroots innovation. He led a research group, supervising scientists, research fellows, interns, and project assistants, while managing research grants and co-supervising a PhD thesis. His work has been published in several esteemed peer-reviewed journals, and he has delivered several talks at both international and national conferences.

Dr Tiwary’s insights on science policy matters feature in op-eds of reputable national newspapers.

Dr. Tiwary obtained his Master of Science degree from Delhi University and his PhD from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in 2002.
