David E. Wazer Professor of Radiation Oncology, Chair of Radiation Oncology

David E. Wazer, M.D. serves as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Brown University. He is radiation oncologist-in-chief at Rhode Island Hospital, the Miriam Hospital, Newport Hospital, Women and Infants Hospital, and Tufts Medical Center. He serves as Interim Director of the Lifespan Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Dr. Wazer is an internationally recognized expert in the application of new technology in the field of radiation oncology. He has published more than 250 scientific articles, and has authored/edited several books including “Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation” and “Image-guided IMRT”. In addition, he is the Co-Editor of “Principles and Practice of Radiation Oncology”, the widely recognized premier textbook of radiation oncology. Dr. Wazer is Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Clinical Oncology and serves as associate editor of the journals Brachytherapy, Frontiers in Radiation Oncology, and Breast Diseases: a Yearbook Quarterly.

Dr. Wazer is board certified in therapeutic radiology by the American Board of Radiology. He earned his medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine. On completion of medical school, he performed a research fellowship in neuropharmacology at NYU. He obtained clinical training in internal medicine at Brown University and in radiation oncology at Tufts University. He has held a number of faculty and research positions at Tufts, Brown, and MIT. He has been a member of several national and international advisory committees related to the science and technology of radiation oncology.

Dr. Wazer’s current areas of clinical research include the study of the efficacy, toxicity, and cost/utility analysis of image-guided radiation therapy, proton beam radiotherapy, partial breast irradiation, brachytherapy, and hyperthermia. He is actively involved in the development of clinical trials for cancers of the breast, skin, GI tract, and lung. He is also actively engaged in multiple initiatives to promote and advance oncology care in the developing world.

Dr. Wazer is a Fellow of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), the American College of Radiology (ACR), and the American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO). He is a member of the Radiation Research Society, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Radium Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He serves on the Board of Directors and as President of The American Brachytherapy Society and as a member of the Radiation Oncology Commission for the American College of Radiology
