Assistant Professor of Computer Science

Overview

Dr. Harini Suresh joined Brown in 2024 as an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science department.  She is also affiliated with the Center for Technological Responsibility, Reimagination and Redesign (CNTR) at the Data Science Institute, and the Department of Science, Technology and Society (STS).  Previously, she completed her B.Sc., M.Eng. and PhD in Computer Science at MIT, and a postdoc at Cornell University.  

Dr. Suresh explores issues of equity, accountability, agency and participation in technology, especially focusing on machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) systems.  Her work is interdisciplinary and draws from areas including STS, feminist and queer theory, sociology, pedagogy, human-computer interaction (HCI), critical computing, and more.  Her ongoing research involves the participatory design of ML tools for data activism as well as explorations around the limits and possibilities of participatory AI in today's technology landscape.
