Dr Sanchez-Esteban attended medical school at the University of Granada in Spain and completed his residency in Pediatrics at the Hospital Valle de Hebron in Barcelona prior to moving to the USA where he completed another residency program in Pediatrics at Metropolitan Hospital in New Yok and fellowship program in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at Women & Infants Hospital/Brown University. He joined the Brown University and neonatology faculty in 2000. His research interest has gravitated from basic and translational research in fetal lung development to clinical research related to point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) where he serves as a co-director of the program.

My research interest is currently focused on quality improvement projects related to the use of non-invasive ventilation such as bubble CPAP, SALSA, etc to decrease the incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Another important area of research is related to POCUS. Current studies include: POCUS program development, use of ultrasound to asssess the position of the central lines, lung ultrasound score for surfactant administration, readiness for extubation, and for characterization and identification of pulmonary edema in hemodynamically significant PDA
