She was a psychology major at the University of North Carolina, and entered medical school at the University of Maryland after a few years working as a camp counselor/trip leader and as a live-in volunteer at a Ronald McDonald House in Adelaide, Australia.  She came to Brown in 2006 to train in the Family Medicine Residency Program at Memorial Hospital, and then earned her MPH at the University of Massachusetts as part of her fellowship in Preventive Medicine. She returned to Brown in 2012 to join the core faculty in the Family Medicine Residency Program, where she was a primary care physician in the Family Care Center and Assistant Clerkship Director for the Family Medicine Clerkship. From 2016-19, she served as the first Student Affairs Dean at the medical school, transitioning to RIDOH early in the COVID pandemic. Her role has evolved since then to focus on the health of refugees, family planning/reproductive justice, and the health of pregnant and parenting families in Rhode Island.  She has been part of the Primary Care-Population Medicine Program since it was founded, co-developing the third year course, "Population and Clinical Medicine," and currently co-leading the second year course, "Leadership in Healthcare."
