Adjunct Professor of Medical Science

Overview

Latha Ganti, MD, MS, MBA, FACEP, FAAN is an adjunct Professor of Medical Science at the Warren Alpert Medical School and a member of the Brown Data Science Institute where she mentors student projects in CSCI2370 "Interdisciplinary Scientific Visualization," and DATA 1150 “Data Science Fellows course.”  A proud mom of two Brown graduates, she is the outgoing chair for the Brown Medical Parents Committee (MPC), where she spearheaded fundraising and developed experiences for junior PLME students.

Dr. Ganti's lab focusses on real world problems that directly impact patient care. As the Research Director for Polk County Fire Rescue, she over sees the prehospital data collection for time sensitive diagnoses including stroke, trauma, STEMI and cardiac arrest. Her data science students help to develop the data visualizations, while the data itself is continually analyzed to implement process improvements. One of Dr. Ganti's passions is teaching the next generation of scholars how to publish their work. She actively engages Brown undergraduates as co-authors and finds opportunities for them to present.

Dr. Ganti is the recipient of the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors (CORD) and Clerkship Directors in Emergency Medicine (CDEM) Distinguished Educator Awards. She serves on the board of directors for the Florida College of Emergency Physicians where she chairs the editorial and publications committee.

In addition to her board certification in Emergency Medicine, Dr. Ganti is also fellowship-trained in Vascular Neurology. She is a graduate of the American Academy of Neurology’s Women’s Leaders in Neurology Program, a recipient of the AAN’s AB Baker Teaching Award, a member of AAN’s education committee, and an editorial board member of AAN’s Brain and Life magazine.

Dr. Ganti has published extensively in the field of neurologic emergencies and medical education, with high impact. Her Google Scholar citations reveal an H index of 48, with more than 9900 citations to her work and over 480 Pubmed® indexed papers. To put this in perspective, the median H index for Professors of Emergency Medicine is 11, with a median of 23 papers.

Dr. Ganti’s expertise is in harnessing the power of data to solve clinical problems such as hospital readmissions, practice inconsistencies, delays in hospital discharges, suboptimal emergency department throughput, low patient satisfaction scores, and lack of community awareness of medical emergencies. By approaching the operational issue from a scholarly perspective, her work is published and thus affords better buy-in from stakeholders. Her research has been adopted into position papers and clinical policies by the American College of Emergency Physicians and the American Academy of Neurology. Her passion to seamlessly integrate research with outstanding patient care, education, and advocacy led to the creation of the UF Center for Brain Injury Research and Education, for which she was the Inaugural Director. Her contributions to developing research enterprises have been recognized by the Mayo Clinic Lifetime Achievement Award for Outstanding Contributions in EM Research, and the Toral Family Foundation Endowed Professorship in Traumatic Brain Injury.

Dr. Ganti is a gifted teacher, as evidenced by her many teaching awards. She is the author of the First Aid Clerkship books, which are the number one bestsellers among medical students. Dr. Ganti is a published scholar with over 1000 scientific abstracts and manuscripts, and 26 books. Indeed, one of the talks she frequently gives at national and international meetings is entitled: “Get Published Now!” She is a sought-after speaker and has lectured as a Visiting Professor at Harvard Medical School, and in various parts of the world, including Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, Denmark, Ireland, Spain, France, India, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom.

Dr. Ganti is the founding editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Emergency Medicine, one of the most widely read open-access journals in EM. Dr. Ganti serves on several committees for ACEP, SAEM, and the American Medical Association. She also serves as a Scientific Review Officer for the United States Military’s Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs and is a member of AMSUS, the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States.

Dr. Ganti has won over 18 national awards, including the EMRA Academic Excellence Award, the ACEP National Faculty Teaching Award, the AMA’s William Beaumont Award, the first EMRA Mentorship Award, and was also celebrated as one of the “Heroes in Emergency Medicine” by the American College of Emergency Physicians in honor of the organization’s 40th anniversary. She won the American Medical Association Young Physician Section Award for Community Service, for her work on stroke research, education, and outreach- a program she titled BEST for “Better Early Stroke Treatment.” Dr. Ganti is also the recipient of the AMA’s “Inspirational Physician Award” for her work mentoring women physicians as well as the AMA Excellence in Medicine Leadership Award. A passionate scholar and lifelong student she was also honored as a 2013 Fulbright Scholar for her project entitled “Innovation in Clinical Research for the Global Health Era.”
