Lynn Hernandez received her doctoral degree in Lifespan Developmental Psychology and masters degree in Mental Health Counseling from Florida International University. Her research interests include developing and examining behavioral interventions for adolescents of color using community-engaged approaches. The long-term objective of her research activities is to reduce health disparities affecting youth of color by developing culturally appropriate interventions that capitalize on culture specific protective factors and address structural healthcare inequities. She has also developed training programs to enhance the cultural competency of services provided in healthcare and educational settings.

Lynn Hernandez's research interests focus on adolescent treatment development and outcome research. She is particularly interested in the development and implementation of culturally sound interventions for adolescents of diverse ethnic/racial backgrounds engaging in risk behaviors, mainly alcohol and other drug use and sexual risk taking. As a developmental psychologist, she is also interested in the examination of psychosocial and ethnocultural variables as protective factors in adolescents' developmental trajectories.
She has conducted treatment outcomes research with adolescents of diverse ethnic/racial backgrounds using school-based approaches, and has examined the influence of psychosocial developmental factors on adolescents' treatment amenability. Currently, she is examining the role that acculturation, ethnic identity, perceived discrimination and familismo play in Latinx families parenting practices and their adolescents' involvement with alcohol and other drug use and sexual risk taking. The goal of these research activities is to develop a culturally-specific adolescent and parent intervention for adolescents engaging in alcohol and other drug use and sexual risk taking behaviors.
