Lynn HernandezAssistant Professor of Behavioral and Social Sciences (Research), Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior (Research)
Lynn Hernandez received her doctoral degree from Florida International University in Lifespan Developmental Psychology in 2007. Her primary research interests focus on the development and implementation of interventions for adolescents of diverse ethnic/racial backgrounds engaging in risk behaviors. She also has interests in understanding the roles that psychosocial and ethnocultural variables play in adolescents' risk behavior trajectories and how this knowledge can inform the development of both developmentally and culturally appropriate interventions.

Lynn Hernandez's primary research interests focus on the development of culturally appropriate prevention and intervention programs for adolescents of diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds. She also has interests in examining the protective role that ethnocultural and psychosocial variables play in adolescents' behavioral trajectories, and how these protective factors can improve adolescents' response to psychosocial treatments.
Lynn Hernandez's research interests focus on adolescent treatment development and outcome research. She is particularly interested in the development and implementation of culturally sound interventions for adolescents of diverse ethnic/racial backgrounds engaging in risk behaviors, mainly alcohol and other drug use and sexual risk taking. As a developmental psychologist, she is also interested in the examination of psychosocial and ethnocultural variables as protective and risk factors in adolescents' developmental trajectories.
She has conducted treatment outcomes research with adolescents of diverse ethnic/racial backgrounds using school-based approaches, and has examined the influence of psychosocial developmental factors on adolescents' treatment amenability. Currently, she is examining the role that acculturation, ethnic identity, perceived discrimination and familismo play in Hispanic/Latino families parenting practices and their adolescents' involvement with alcohol and other drug use and sexual risk taking. The goal of these research activities is to develop a culturally-specific adolescent and parent intervention for adolescents engaging in alcohol and other drug use and sexual risk taking behaviors.
