Overview

Liwei Jiao received his Ph.D. in Chinese linguistics from Nankai University in 2003. Before coming to Brown in 2018, he had taught Chinese at Renmin University of China, the University of Durham in England and the University of Pennsylvania for twenty years. He frequently teaches Advanced Modern Chinese, Beginning Chinese and Business Chinese. His research interests include Chinese lexicography, Chinese phonetics and the relationship between Chinese language and culture. Among his many publications are Chinese Phonetics in the 20th Century (Shuhai, 2004), 500 Common Chinese Idioms (Routledge, 2010), 500 Common Chinese Proverbs and Colloquial Expressions (Routeldge, 2013), A Thematic Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese (Routledge, 2019), and A Cultural Dictionary of the Chinese Language (Routledge, 2019). He currently serves as Coordinator of the Chinese Language Program.
