Assistant Professor of Chemistry

Overview

Matthew Coley-O'Rourke is a theoretical chemist working to understand the static and dynamical properties of electrons in complex quantum materials. His research focuses on developing new computational methods that can accurately describe entangled electrons from first principles. He applies these methods to make predictions about quantum phase transitions, quantum magnetism, and electronic coherence in 2D materials and nanomaterials (quantum dots). Matthew received his A.B. in Physics from Princeton University in 2017, his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Caltech in 2023, and subsequently did postdoctoral work at UC Berkeley. He joined the Brown faculty in summer 2025.
