Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine, Clinician Educator

Overview

Matthew R. Klein, MD MPH is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine, Clinician Educator at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. 

Originally from Chicago, Dr. Klein earned his MD from Brown in 2014. He trained in emergency medicine and completed a fellowship in medical education scholarship at the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University. He developed a passion for education while serving as chief resident, assistant program director, and clerkship director at Northwestern, before joining the Brown Emergency Medicine faculty in 2023.

Dr. Klein currently serves as a Mary B. Arnold Mentor and an Emergency Medicine Specialty Advisor, in addition to teaching second-year students in the Doctoring course. He is a member of the medical school admissions committee and the medical committee on academic standing and professionalism. Clinically, he works as an attending physician at Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital.

Dr. Klein's academic interests include curriculum design, simulation-based mastery learning, and career advising. He has published in several education journals, including Academic Medicine, Medical Teacher, the Journal of Graduate Medical Education, and AEM Education & Training.
