I was born and reared in Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania, located in the western middle field of the anthracite coal mining region of east central Pennsylvania. I attended Bucknell University receiving both a B.S. and an M.S. degree in 1972 with a concentration in chemistry. I completed a Ph.D. degree at Columbia University in 1976 with a dissertation entitled Investigation of a Novel Carbon-Carbon Bond Forming Reaction . After an NIH-funded, post-doctoral fellowship at  M.I.T. in 1979, I began my independent career in the chemistry department at Brown University.
