Professor of Surgery

Overview

Simone Thavaseelan, MD is an Associate Professor of Surgery (Urology) at the Warren Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University where she has been faculty since 2011.  She is a graduate of Georgetown University SOM in 2005, urology residency in 2010 followed by fellowship in Endourology/ Minimally Invasive Urology in 2011 both at Brown University.  She is the Section Chief of Urology at the Providence VA Medical Center as a half-time VA employee with a concurrent halftime position at Brown Urology Inc (BUI) as the Program Director of the residency since 2016 and subspecializes in Endourology.  She focuses her scholarship on graduate medical education and diversity, equity, and inclusion.  She serves on the Graduate Medical Education Committee at Brown/Rhode Island Hospital, the Board of Directors of BUI, the Advisory Board of Office of Women in Medicine & Science, as the Chair of the Diversity & Inclusion Committee for the Department of Surgery, and the Board of Directors of the Society of Women in Urology.  She has recently completed service as on the Board of the Society of Academic Urology as well as Vice Chair of the American Urological Association (AUA) Task Force on Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) in 2021 and serves as a member of the AUA D&I Committee. She has participated on committees in the New England AUA, the AUA, and specialty societies.
