Associate Professor

Overview

Tyler R. Kartzinel is an Associate Professor in the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology at Brown University and a Fellow of the Institute at Brown for Environment and Society. He leads the Genomic Opportunities Lab (GenOps), focusing on integrating molecular ecology, field research, and data science to investigate species interactions and biodiversity conservation. His pioneering work in DNA metabarcoding has illuminated complex ecological dynamics, such as dietary niche partitioning among African large herbivores and the covariation of diet and gut microbiomes in diverse wildlife. Kartzinel has also applied DNA metabarcoding to human nutrition, developing methods to assess plant consumption through fecal DNA analysis, offering a more accurate alternative to traditional dietary surveys. His research has been featured in prominent journals and media outlets, including Nature, PNAS, National Geographic, BBC World News Television, PBS NOVA, The New York Times, and NPR. Kartzinel has received significant several honors, including the NSF CAREER Award, an NSF Early Career Fellowship, and election as an Early Career Fellow by the Ecological Society of America for his outstanding contributions at the interface of ecology and molecular biology. His work continues to shape the field of molecular ecology and inform conservation strategies globally.
