Associate Professor of Pediatrics (Research)

Overview

Dr. Chen is a medical professional and researcher with a diverse academic background. He earned his M.D. degree from Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University in China and went on to obtain a Master's degree in Neurobiology and a Ph.D. in Human Biology from the Philipp University of Marburg in Germany. Dr. Chen joined Women & Infants' Hospital in 2010 as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Pediatrics, where he worked under Dr. Barbara Stonestreet. Currently, he holds the position of assistant professor and is highly specialized in the field of perinatal brain injury.

Dr. Chen's research is focused on perinatal brain injury, which he investigates using unique fetal ovine and neonatal rat in vivo models, primary cerebral and cerebellar neuronal cultures, and stem cell-derived in vitro blood-brain barrier models. He has over twelve years of experience in biomedical research, with expertise in drug discovery, pharmacology, cell signaling, molecular and cell biology, and neurobiology. His primary specialization is in perinatal brain injury, including the underlying mechanisms such as neuroinflammation, blood-brain barrier breakdown, and cell death, and the development of neuroprotective strategies, such as neuroimmunological treatment.
