Associate Professor of Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Biochemistry (Research)

Overview

Dr Chew earned her undergraduate honors degree in Biochemistry from the National University of Singapore, and then her PhD in molecular endocrinology at the Neuropeptide Laboratory of the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (now A*Star) at the National University of Singapore. She then pursued postdoctoral training in glutamate receptor regulation and glial cell development at the National Institutes of Health, in the laboratory of Dr Vittorio Gallo. She sought further training in the molecular regulation of cancer angiogenesis at the Lombardi Cancer Center of Georgetown University. Thereafter, she joined the Center for Neuroscience Research at Children’s National Hospital in Washington DC, affiliated with the George Washington University as Assistant Research Professor, where she resumed her studies in cellular and molecular mechanisms of brain white matter development and repair, while supporting the research programs of Dr Gallo, who was Director at the Center for Neuroscience Research. Her work has been supported by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and together with Dr Gallo, by the NIH and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Her research interests include inflammatory effects on intracellular signaling pathways in oligodendrocyte development and regeneration, and underlying mechanisms of gray and white matter damage in developmental brain injury.
