Andrew James Tompkins, MD is a General Urologist and Medical Educator at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Dr. Tompkins specializes in shared decision making, the evaluation & management of benign prostatic enlargement (BPE), nocturia, surgical treatments and medical prevention of kidney stones, and “risk-based” screening for prostate cancer. He is an early adopter of minimally invasive surgical technology and offers a wide array of treatment options for benign prostatic enlargement (BPE) including Rezum Thermotherapy, iTind, Urolift, Bipolar Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP), Greenlight Laser Vaporization of the Prostate (TUVP), and laser enucleation procedures (ThuLep).
After completing undergraduate studies at Cornell University, Dr. Tompkins earned his medical degree at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and graduated with honors (AOA). He completed Urology residency at the Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University and was elected to the Sigma Xi scientific honors society at Brown University. He is board certified and a diplomate of the American Board of Urology. While in practice he served as the Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship site director prior to joining Brown Urology in 2017.
He is interested in medical education, optimizing performance, shared decision making, surgical instruction, minimally invasive surgical procedural training, and physician wellness. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Surgery (Urology) at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, serves on the Council of Specialty Career Advisors, Co-Director of the Urology Clerkship, instructor in the “Healers Art” course and is a small group faculty leader in the “Doctoring” course for 1stand 2nd year medical students.
Dr. Tompkins sees patients at the Providence VA Medical Center on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays. He will be seeing patients at Brown Urology on Wednesday and Thursdays.
