Gaetano Barone completed his Ph.D. in top quark physics at the University of Geneva (Switzerland) and, consequently, he held appointments at Brandeis Univerisity and Brookhaven National Laboratories. After a long tenure with the ATLAS Collaboration, he joined the CMS Collaboration with his appointment at Brown University.
Throughout his research, he made an important contribution to the success of the wider particle physics research program in the sectors related to the Higgs boson, electroweak interactions, and Top quark. He focuses specifically on the electroweak properties in the Higgs sector in the massive diboson decay channels. Besides guiding and coordinating several analysis efforts from start to publication in the Higgs and electroweak sectors, Gaetano Barone held high-level coordinator positions within the international collaborations whose responsibility involved setting and executing the directions of the Collaboration’s physics program.

I measure the properties of the fundamental electroweak interactions with precision and depth. The lack of evidence for new resonant phenomena at the energy scales probed by the current center-of-mass-energies of the Large Hadron Collider’s collisions suggests that the unknown hides beyond the direct reach of the experiment, that is, either at larger energy scales or in uncovered corners of the phase-space. Therefore, I am broadening our understanding of the Higgs boson potential and the electroweak sectors of the Standard Model (SM). By executing precision-level measurements and by measuring rare processes in unexplored corners of the phase space involving additional hadronic activity, I relate the effects between the resonant Higgs production and the electroweak vector boson scattering. I use these measurements as a smart toolkit to shed light on physics beyond the SM. The simultaneous analysis reduces the uncertainty originating from systematic components and enhances the sensitivity of new physics as a function of each process’s energy scale.
Understanding how to improve future particle detection technologies is fundamental for increasing the resolution with which we measure our fundamental quantities and the precision with which we reject background activity in our detectors. This is why I develop and test the next generation of position-sensitive and picosecond-capable silicon devices for applications in HEP and beyond.
I foster long-term innovation in the broader electroweak sectors in current and future collider experiments by developing cutting-edge experimental techniques in detector improvement, detector calibration, and analysis techniques.
