Adjunct Assistant Professor of Medicine

Overview

Laura Sanapo, MD, MSHS, RDMS is a Research Scientist at the Women’s Medicine Collaborative. She is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology in Italy and an expert in fetal medicine. Before joining Women’s Medicine Collaborative, she served with distinction as Research Scientist at Children’s National, in Washington DC, and as adjunct Assistant Professor of Clinical and Translational Research and Leadership at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences where she taught young scientists clinical investigation and critical analysis.

Dr. Sanapo’ s research aims to understand fetal physiology and pathophysiology and correlation with different maternal conditions, with a specific focus on identifying prenatal biomarkers predicting adverse fetal and neonatal outcome, with the goal of delineating perinatal management strategies tailored to specific high-risk pregnancies.

Dr. Sanapo has extensively investigated the fetal cardiovascular system by using advanced ultrasound techniques in pregnancies complicated by in-utero hypoxia and exposure to maternal administration of oxygen. She has also investigated the diagnostic accuracy of different imaging techniques in predicting fetal growth. Her long-term research goal is to investigate the effects of different maternal conditions, such as sleep disordered breathing, hypertension and stress on fetal growth and development.

Dr. Sanapo received her medical degree from the University of Parma, Italy. She completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Padua in Italy, a research fellowship at the Center for Advanced Fetal Care, University of Maryland, Baltimore, and a clinical and research fellowship at the Fetal Medicine Institute, Children’s National Medical Center, in Washington, DC. She obtained a master’s degree in Health Science-Clinical and Translational Research at The George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences in Washington, DC. Dr. Sanapo was named “Outstanding Graduate Student” while pursuing her MSHS degree at the George Washington University.
