Rob is interested in the relationships between the manual crafts, art, and the styles of writing, especially in terms of narrative presence and revision practices. He teaches courses in these areas, including the Art of Craft, Ekphrasis Writing for Art’s Sake, and An Introduction to Creative Style, as well as courses on nature writing, creative nonfiction, and the academic essay.
Rob has published two books: Understanding James Leo Herlihy (University of South Carolina Press, 2012) and the edited volume Nelson Algren: A Collection of Critical Essays (Fairleigh Dickinson University Press, 2007). He has published essays and book chapters in Moving Words: Multimodal and Digital Creative Writing Pedagogies, the Journal of Black Mountain College Studies, the Idea of the City: Early-Modern, Modern and Post-Modern Locations and Communities, Birdcoat Quarterly, The Anacronist: Journal of English and American Studies, Impost: A Journal of Creative and Critical Work, The Encyclopedia of the Romantic Era, Beyond Words Magazine, Lifewriting Annual: Biographical and Autobiographical Studies, Twentieth Century Literature Criticism, and Resources for American Literary Study. He served as the Reviews Editor for Lifewriting Annual: Biographical and Autobiographical Studies from 2015-24, which was published by AMS Press and, later, by University College London, Birkbeck.
He has given talks on these and other subjects at various conferences in the US, including Asheville, New York, and Boston - and in Europe, including Groningen, Lancaster, Swansea, Northampton, and Aberystwyth. He organized the first international conference on Nelson Algren, which took place at the University of Leeds in 2000.

Rob's essay on hummingbirds and the life and art of Martin Johnson Heade was shortlisted for the 2024 Moth Nature Writing Award and earned a "highly commendable" by the judge of the award, Cal Flyn. His essay "Four Last Songs" (After Richard Strauss)" was one of three winning entries to the Beyond Words Magazine's 2025 short essay award. He has received research grants and scholarships from the British Academy, the University of Cumbria, the Arts and Humanities Research Board, and the American Embassy in London.
