Professor of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences

Overview

In January, 2013, I joined what is now the Department of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences at Brown University. I work mainly within the Oceans, Ice, and Atmospheres Research Group.  i am the STEM faculty director of the Equitable Climate Futures initiative, an elected fellow of the Institute at Brown for Environment and Society (IBES), an affiliated faculty member of the Brown Theoretical Physics Center, the Brown Center for Fluid Mechanics, and the Initiative for Sustainable Energy, and I support the SciToons program.

I was a coordinating lead author of the Ocean, Cryosphere, and Sea Level Change chapter of the IPCC Sixth Assessment Physical Science Basis (WGI) Report. I am a co-chair of the Earth System Modelling and Observations Core Project of the World Climate Research Program, and I was previously a co-chair of the CLIVAR Ocean Model Development Panel and the USCLIVAR Process Studies and Model Improvement Panel. I am an associate editor of Science Advances and was an editor of the Journal of Physical Oceanography from 2017 to 2023.

From 2007-2012, I was a fellow of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences and an assistant professor at the University of Colorado Boulder. I taught in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and was an affiliate of the Department of Applied Mathematics. Before Boulder, I worked as a NOAA Climate and Global Change postdoc and Research Scientist with Raffaele Ferrari at MIT and Geoff Vallis at Princeton and GFDL. My Ph.D. is from the MIT/WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography working with Joe Pedlosky (at WHOI) and Paola Rizzoli (at MIT). In my pre-oceanographic career, I trained in physics at Reed with Nick Wheeler and at Brandeis with Stanley Deser and X.-J. Wang.
