Overview

Dr. Ethan Balk is co-Director of the AHRQ-sponsored Brown Evidence-based Practice Center and Associate Director of the Center for Evidence Synthesis in Health. After several years as a primary care physician and a subsequent Masters in Public Health in Biostatistics and Epidemiology, he has pursued a carreer in systematic review, meta-analysis, and clinical guideline development. For 14 years he was Associate Director of the Tufts Evidence-based Practice Center (at Tufts Medical Center, Boston, MA) and then Director of the Tufts Center for Clinical Evidence Synthesis. He was also Co-Director of the National Kidney Foundation Center for Guideline Development and Implementation at Tufts-New England Medical Center which provided methodological and educational expertise to the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes guideline-development foundation. For 15 years, he has also consulted as a methodological expert for the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons Systematic Review Group. Dr. Balk has over 250 publications on systematic reviews of a broad range of medical, surgical, health, and nutrition topics. He has led the Evidence Review Teams for numerous guidelines for management of kidney disease, gynecological surgery, orthopedic surgery, and triaging in resource-poor countries.
