Overview

Dr. Ethan Balk is co-Director of the AHRQ-sponsored Brown Evidence-based Practice Center and Associate Director of the Center for Evidence Synthesis in Health. After several years as a primary care physician and a subsequent Masters in Public Health in Biostatistics and Epidemiology, he has pursued a carreer in systematic review, meta-analysis, and clinical guideline development. For 14 years he was Associate Director of the Tufts Evidence-based Practice Center (at Tufts Medical Center, Boston, MA) and then Director of the Tufts Center for Clinical Evidence Synthesis. He transferred to the Brown School of Public Health in 2014. He was also Co-Director of the National Kidney Foundation Center for Guideline Development and Implementation at Tufts-New England Medical Center which provided methodological and educational expertise to the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes guideline-development foundation. Since 2008, he has consulted as a methodological expert for the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons Systematic Review Group. Dr. Balk has over 300 publications on systematic reviews of a broad range of medical, surgical, health, and nutrition topics. He has led the Evidence Review Teams for numerous guidelines for management of kidney disease, gynecological surgery, ALL in adolescents and young adults, and orthopedic surgery.
