Professor of Emergency Medicine, Clinician Educator

Overview

Jessica L. Smith, MD, FACEP is the Director of Graduate Medical Education, Designated Institutional Official, and Associate Chief Medical Officer at Rhode Island Hospital. Her clinical practice is in emergency medicine, and she is a Professor of Emergency Medicine, Clinician Educator, at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

Dr. Smith graduated from the University of Miami School of Medicine where she was inducted into the Iron Arrow Honor Society and received the John K. Robinson Award for Professionalism, Humanity, and Citizenship.

She completed her Emergency Medicine training at Boston Medical Center, and joined the Brown EM faculty in 2006. She is a CORD Distinguished Educator, a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians, and has served in multiple national leadership positions in ACEP, CORD, and SAEM.

She served for almost a decade on the CORD-EM Board of Directors (Immediate Past President 2024-2025), and currently sits on the RI ACEP Board of Directors and the University of Miami Medical Alumni Board. She is involved in emergency medicine advocacy and is a mentor to medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty. She has dedicated much of her career to volunteer service and leadership development, and has earned local and national clinical and teaching awards.

Her primary academic focus and area of expertise is graduate medical education, with niches in patient care, professionalism/professional development, and remediation. Clinical areas of interest include trauma and critical care.
