She has served as the Chair of the Credential Committee for the Neonatal/Perinatal Sub-board of the American Board of Pediatrics and has served as an Associate Editor for the scientific journals Free Radicals in Biology and Medicine and Pediatrics, where she oversaw the State of the Art series. She was also appointed to the Secretary of Health and Human Services Advisory Committee on Infant Mortality and served on the Community Action Team of the Medical Examiner’s Office in Philadelphia focused on infant mortality.
Dr. Dennery was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2014, elected as a fellow of the Society for Free Radicals in Biology and Medicine in 2014 and to the Association of American Physicians in 2015.
Dr. Dennery’s laboratory research is focused understanding mechansisms of neonatal lung injury and repair. Her clinical interests are in neonatal jaundice, bronchopulmonary dysplasia and the long-term consequences of prematurity as well as on perinatal health disparities and the impact of race in Medicine. She leads a Pediatric clinical trials network funded by the NIH.

I developed an interest in understanding the mechanisms by which hyperoxic lung injury occurs in the newborns during my fellowship training in neonatal-perinatal medicine. After fellowship I took an academic position at Stanford University where I focused on understanding the role of heme oxygenase (HO-1), the rate-limiting enzyme in bilirubin production and a stress protein, in lung anti-oxidative defenses. My work identified developmental differences in the response of HO-1 to oxidative stress. While at Stanford I began collaborating with Rodney Levine at the National Institutes of Health and also with Douglas Spitz at Washington University. These collaborations enabled me to better determine oxidative stress signaling in rodent and cell model systems through molecular biology approaches. We defined the non-enzymatic function of HO-1 as a signaling molecule and described its migration from the smooth endoplasmic reticulum to the nucleus. I was then recruited to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia/University of Pennsylvania as the Division Director of Neonatology. There I continued to explore how HO-1 mediates its functions in the lung and established a collaboration with Dr. Mitch Lazar at the University of Pennsylvania to explore circadian biology, in particular the nuclear receptor protein Rev-erb alpha, which has heme as a co-factor, and its relationship with HO-1 in mediating neonatal lung injury and repair. I assumed the leadership in the Department of Pediatrics at Brown University in 2015 and was able to continue my research since I am surrounded by investigators in lung biology through the Brown institute for Respiratory Diseases, led by Dr. Jack Elias, the Dean of Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University. We are now exploring how HO-1, which degrades heme, a key component of mitochondrial function affects metabolic pathways and mitochondrial bioenergenics and how this impacts neonatal lung injury and repair.
Dr. Dennery’s laboratory research is focused understanding mechansisms of neonatal lung injury and repair. She has defined the role of heme oxygenase (HO), the rate-limiting enzyme in heme degradation in mediating cytoprotective responses in the lung and has also identified a role for HO in circadian regulation of injury and repair. She is currently exploring how mitochondrial bioenergetics mediate responses to oxidative stress in the neonatal lung exposed to hyperoxia.
More recently, Dr Dennery was awarded a grant from the Office of the Director NIH for the ECHO ( environmental impact on child health outcomes) program Idea States Pediatric Clinical trials Network to enroll patients in trials focused on Obesity, Respiratory Disorders, Perinatal Neonatal issues and Behavioral Disorders.
