Dr. von Ash is a social epidemiologist by training whose research centers on childhood obesity prevention, but also targets caregivers (e.g., parents and childcare providers) not only as a way to improve child health but also caregiver health. Dr. von Ash’s work largely focuses on undertsanding and addressing obesity and cancer rleated disparities (e.g., racial/ethnic and socioeconomic) and related risk factors. She examines how social, cultural, and environmental factors influence physical activty, sleep, and dietary behaviors. Using both quantitative and qualitative methods, her innovative epidemiological and intervention studies have made several important contributions to the literature. For example, she is the first to demonstrate that differences in sleep duration across racial and ethnic groups emerge are emergy during the first month of life. She is also the first to leverage youth sports as a setting for delivering health promotion interventions to parents. Importantly, Dr. von Ash's work is grounded in community engagement and implementation science, with the hope of making meaninfgul and lasting change.
