Overview

Karen Jennings Mathis, PhD,  APRN-CNP, PMHNP-BC is a research scientist at the Center for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine (CBPM) at The Miriam Hospital and assistant professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the Warren Alpert Medical School, Brown University. Dr. Jennings Mathis's research focuses on risk and protective cultural factors in the onset and maintenance of disordered eating and eating disorders within Black populations while considering intersectionality. Her ultimate goal is to transform evidence-based assessments and treatments to be more culturally sensitive and relevant. Dr. Jennings Mathis earned a BA in Psychology from Amherst College and a MS and PhD in nursing from Boston College. Subsequently, Dr. Jennings Mathis completed the NIMH T32 Midwest Regional Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Chicago, was tenure-track faculty at the University of Rhode Island, and is a scholar of the NIMHD Health Disparities Research Institute. Dr. Jennings Mathis is also a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner.
