Dr. Heather Hower, DSW, LICSW, QCSW, ACSW, served as the Project Director of the Course and Outcome of Bipolar Youth (COBY) study in the Warren Alpert Medical School, Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, from 2007-2018. She has served as a Faculty Research Associate in the School of Public Health, Department of Health Services, Policy, and Practice, Hassenfeld Child Innovation Institute, from 2016-Present. Heather also has a Faculty Associate Specialist appointment at the University of California San Diego in the School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, from 2019-Present. Her fields of interest include Bipolar Disorders (BD) and Eating Disorders (ED).

As the Project Director of the Course and Outcome of Bipolar Youth (COBY) study in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior (2007-2018), my focus was on compiling, analyzing, and presenting the related longitudinal data (e.g., participant interviews, creating data sets, running analyses, writing papers, grants, NIMH and IRB Progress Reports, and presenting at conferences, e.g., The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry [AACAP]).
As a Faculty Reseach Associate in the School of Public Health, Department of Health Services, Policy, and Practice (2016-current), my focus is as an advisor on the Board of the Hassenfeld Child Innovation Institute. I assist with the overall Board meeting planning/presentations, as well grant writing for the Healthy Weight and Nutrition Initiative.
I am also Faculty Associate Specialist at the University of California San Diego, School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, Eating Disorders Center for Treatment and Research (2019-current). I served as a Board Member of the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) (2013-2021), including Conference Committee Co-Chair and Research Advisory Council (RAC). I am an eating disorders grant reviewer for the Department of Defense (DOD), a Faculty Member and conference presenter at Academy for Eating Disorders (AED), a conference proposal reviewer for the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals (IAEDP), a manuscript reviewer for the International Journal of Eating Disorders (IJED), an advocate for the Eating Disorder Coalition (EDC), a research assistant for Jenni Schaefer’s forthcoming book, and a writer of eating disorder blogs for NEDA, Jenni Schaefer, Project HEAL, and Medium. My current research interests include capitalizing on eating disorder traits as strengths, promoting temperament-based treatments, and defining recovery through both quantitative methods (statistical) and qualitative methods (lived experiences).
I have thus far first or co-authored over 50 papers and 40 posters on bipolar disorders and eating disorders, and I continue to collaborate my colleagues on papers, posters, and conference presentations.
As the former Project Director of the Course and Outcome of Bipolar Youth (COBY) study in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior (2007-2018), I continue to contribute to Bipolar Disorder papers, posters, and presentations.
As a Faculty Reseach Associate in the School of Public Health, Department of Health Services, Policy, and Planning, Hassenfeld Child Institute, my focus in writing on Healthy Weight and Nutrition grants.
Within my roles related to eating disorders, including as a Faculty Associate Specialist at University of Californina San Diego, School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, Eating Disorders Center for Treatment and Research, Faculty Member at Academy for Eating Disorders (AED) and former Board Member of the National Eating Disorders Association (2013-2021), I continue to contribute to research studies, papers, posters, and presentations, with a focus on capitalizng on eating disorder traits as strengths, promoting temperapment-based treatments, and defining recovery through both quanitative methods (statistical) and qualitative methods (lived experiences).
